Human Errors in Cyber Security Breaches
We must accept human error as inevitable, and design around that fact.
Technology alone will not keep your organization safe. Humans are the backbone of any organization, but they are not cybersecurity experts by nature.
A study by Stanford University answers the age-old question of what percentage of data breaches are caused by human error: that employee mistakes cause 88% of data breach incidents.
According to another IBM Security study, that number is closer to 95%.
Also, Egress’ Insider Data Breach Survey 2021 revealed that human error being the top cause of serious incidents, according to 84% of IT leaders surveyed.
Verizon’s 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) details examples of human errors that lead to data breaches. In fact, 74% of incidents include some human element
And all of this is despite organizations significantly increasing their security budgets over the last ten years.
